I’m Sophia Walsh, a senior journalism and advertising & public relations double major with a minor in racial justice, equity and inclusion at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

I was the editor-in-chief for The Daily Nebraskan, leading a team of about 100 staff members and ensured our daily operations were running properly for the semester. I began working with The Daily Nebraskan my freshman year as a news reporter and photographer. The following year, I was one of two assistant multimedia editors, where I had the opportunity to gain more leadership and photojournalism skills, which solidified my decision to pursue a multimedia-focused career. In addition to my position at The Daily Nebraskan, I was a reporter for my local weekly newspaper, The North Platte Bulletin, as well as a freelance photographer for the Holdrege Chamber of Commerce where I gained experience in community-based journalism, which continues to be a passion of mine.

After graduation, I want to explore all that journalism has to offer whether that is being a community reporter, working with a non-profit to tell the stories of the community they serve, or my dream of being a photojournalist for the Associated Press.

Work Experience

The Daily Nebraskan

Editor-in-Chief (July 2023 - June 2024)

Oversaw the newsroom operations of about 100 employees from editorial, business and managerial standpoints. Set our annual budget and lead staff-wide meetings. 

Assistant Multimedia Editor, News Reporter and Diversity and Inclusion Board Member (July 2022 - June 2023)

Assisted in administrative tasks such as editing and publishing multimedia content. Created multimedia content. Worked in a team to brainstorm and implement programs to increase diverse voices in the workplace as well as how to be more inclusive in our reporting.

News Reporter and Photographer (Sep. 2021  - June 2022, July 2024 - Jan. 2025)

Reported on events and generated pitches for written and multimedia
content such as photos and video.

Holdrege Chamber of Commerce

Seasonal Freelance Photographer (Dec. 2021, Dec. 2022)

Shot photos at Holdrege's Annual Winterfest to provide the Chamber of Commerce with promotional photos to use for the event and the town in following years. 

The North Platte Bulletin

Reporter (June 2020 - Aug. 2021)

Reported on events through written and multimedia content. Renewed newspaper subscriptions. Proofread the entire issue before publishing. Assisted in the newspaper distribution process.

UNL Conference Services

Conference Assistant (May 2022 - present)

Assisted adult and youth overnight university guests with room check-ins and check-outs. Promoted guest safety by completing building rounds.
